Terrific Tuesday (3/17)

Tuesday was a really good day for all of us! Gracie got up and had to get ready for school; therefore, we all had to get ready for school and it just went so well. We were all out the door and in the van on time and Gracie and Karys were so excited to show Nathan where Gracie went to school at...more than that though I think Nathan was excited to see it too! So we brought her over, watched her wash her hands, write her name on the board, and gave hugs ;) After that, Nathan, Karys and I headed to the library to play. It was only 9:15 and Toddler Story hour wasn't until 10, but they were excited to play and jump around a little first so we headed straight there.

The Orange City library just does such a good job with their programming and also utilizing their facilities. They have a room with tables, toys, and "cushion" type things that the kids love to jump on, so we hung out in there til Miss Becky said it was time to start. The kids did great! Sat so well and listened to stories and participated in rhymes that all related to birds. They loved this little rhyme Miss Becky did with little blackbird puppets on her fingers..."Two little blackbirds sitting on a wall. One named Peter, one named Paul...."When it was finished they got to color pictures of little birdies and they tape a Popsicle stick to the back so they would be able to bounce and fly them around.Karys waiting patiently for her stick...Nathan was already done and "flying" his so she wanted to join him ASAP ;)Nathan jumping up and down with his little birdie while Karys finished upThey headed over to be able to jump out of "trees" with them and fly them all around the roomNathan was also totally into wearing this helmet! He walked all over with it on his head......and even recruited this little girl, Summer, to find a hat and come fly in his airplane with him!Once story hour was over, we needed to head out to pick up Gracie and get home and eat some lunch. I think Karys converted Nathan over to loving PBJ daily for the week he was with us b/c today it was his idea to eat that instead of Karys'...and no mom, I didn't eat that everyday ;) But I did ask for it! After lunch we headed out to play more since that had worked so well to run off some energy before nap the day before. It was even warmer out today so all the kiddos wanted to wear flip flops...well since I only have girls, the only color flip flops I had were pink and Nathan was actually totally excited and eager to wear them. Had to have a pic to show his dad...the boy who wakes up in the morning and wants nothing more than to wear his Hawkeye football uniform for the day, also this afternoon wanted nothing more than to wear these shoes ;) Love it!Karys standing next to the Dora bike all ready to go...Gracie ran in to get her "bike riding" shoes b/c flip-flops were not safe! The helmet was again a hot commodity b/t the three of them. Might have to have one come with him next one so we have enough they can each have one...had a hard time sharing these.Nathan was working on his track running by running laps around our side walk...don't worry if he falls down his head is safe!Later that night we went to Pizza Ranch for supper...when we got home Nathan really wanted to run again only this time he wanted to "chase". He and Karys took turns chasing each other all around the sidewalk..."I think he's gonna tag me...""Oh no, I lost my shoe!""Here, let me hold your hair back while you get it on again..."Gracie was ready to join the fun...After scrutinizing an "owie" on her finger and finally getting a Dora band-aid to cover it!"Uncle Rob, I chase you! Let's go, run fast!""You are too fast for me Nephew Nathan, I need a rest!"All the kiddos running in a line....baths for everyone tonight!LOVE THIS PICTURE!Uncle Rob leading the way while the girls try to keep up...Nathan at this point had been running for a LONG time! He was starting to tell me how hot and tired he was getting, but then would just take off running again ;)We then headed in and got jammies on...Rob wanted to get a picture for Chad of Nathan in his princess pull-up. No we did not put this on him just to take the picture;) But realized he didn't have any with him and needed to borrow one of the girls...poor kid though, we never made it over to Sioux Center Wal-Mart to buy him his own so he did wear them all week! Fun times brushing teeth....Nathan is really good at brushing on his own and I think that wore off well on my girls b/c they actually like to do it now!

All business and no messing around, we need to get to bed ;) Gotta love the matching PJs too..."I want my Christmas jammies like Nathan."
The kids had a such a GREAT day! They had a little bit harder time falling asleep, Karys was the one keeping them up for the most part...just can't seem to want to stop talking ;)

The Sun is Shining!

Monday morning last week was one of the nicest day we had had in a while and the projected high was to bet up to 50 or so. I think just the outlook of this was enough to get us up and moving in the morning ;) The kids definitely needed to get out of the house, so we got jackets on and hats and gloves and set off to the park. This was our first trip to the park this year and it was so interesting to watch the girls head off to the places we spent so many hours last year and just have it look so different. Things I worried about them doing this year are like nothing for them to do now. They just looked so big and acted so independent...mom moment I guess;)

It was also so fun to have Nathan with us! He was so eager to have the girls show him the different areas of the park and to explore it. While they were on the merry-go-round her would yell to Gracie, "Faster, Faster!" But in the next breath, he would say, "Auntie Erin, the floor is falling!" We talked about if he was dizzy and he informed me he had never been dizzy before and it was no fun ;) It must have been a little bit fun though b/c he was back on there a couple more times....each time saying the same thing. Gracie loves being the older cousin who pushes the little ones and tells them to hold on tight.Karys especially looked big to me...she would climb and jump in many of the same ways Gracie did and has in the past, didn't ask for help as often, and had that look of fear or hesitation missing from her eyes.Gracie could climb the rock wall on her own...the first couple times she got to the top and would just look at me with a surprised look like, "Wow, I just did that without help? Better try that again..." The monkey hang and swing is still a favorite for the ladies :)Nathan also liked to swing, poor guy fell in a puddle going down the slide a little bit before this picture was taken...didn't take long for him to bounce back and be running again but I felt so bad for him ;)Everyone loved the swings! Nathan wanted to go higher, higher....gracie wasn't so sure about the underdog yet this year....and Karys just liked to pump her feet back and forth and back and forth!Pink cheeks and big smiles!Nathan was the only one who wanted to ride in the stroller...the girls just had to walk! Think we are going be doing a lot of walking and baby carrying this summer :) Gotta love the wand Nathan was carrying around all morning....this all boy, boy was definitely introduced to the world of pink! After we were chilled at the park, we headed across the street to the bakery to pick up a cookie. Rob was working on some school stuff at the local coffee shop so cookies in hand we headed over a block to eat our cookies with him and give him a brief study break. Everyone had to check out what he was doing before we headed on our way home! The afternoon just continued to get warmer, so we headed out one more time after lunch and before our nap time. Gracie really wanted to play sidewalk chalk...or should I say she wanted to instruct me in what I should draw with sidewalk chalk while she watched ;) Nathan was busy taking care of the "man stuff" that needed to get done outside...apparently really dangerous stuff b/c he insisted on having the bike helmet on to do it ;)Karys was busy running around from bike to bike as well...definitely not slowing down to play chalk ;) Gracie eventually needed to move around a little more too and wanted her turn with a helmet, so she headed off to batting practice while Karys and Nathan fielded for her!
All in all we had a good Monday, you could tell it was definitely a transition/adjustment day from the weekend for all of us! A few more tears than normal and nice, long naps for everyone including mommy ;) Guess we just needed one of those days to store up energy for the week to come!

Nathan comes to stay...

On our way home from the REVAMP retreat, we stopped in Albert Lea to pick up not only our girls...but also our nephew Nathan. Nathan was getting the awesome opportunity to come to the metropolis of Orange City for SPRING BREAK! I had volunteered to keep him when the girls asked me the Thursday before if cousin Nathan could "come over and play?" Not knowing what to say right away I thought about it a minute and then thought, you know what...he might just be able to. I have been on Spring Break these past two weeks and with the Comforts coming from the Des Moines area anyway, we might just be able to work out a little swap. Things had been going pretty well with pregnancy and i just didn't see another opportunity in the near future to invite him just schedule wise and things getting closer to the arrival of our new little sister! So luckily we offered and his mommy and daddy said YES! Nathan was all excited to come and visit Gracie and Karys and was good to go for the car ride up. The kiddos got to ride in Papa Brent's truck on the way to Albert Lea b/c it was the only car that all three car seats would fit in ;) and then they got to ride in "big vans" with a bunch of high schoolers the rest of the way to OC. They loved it! Some of the girls we have babysit did a GREAT job of keeping them engaged and entertained ;) Nathan opened right up to them and introduced himself as "Nathan Josiah Vande Lune"

A pic of all the kiddos lined up in the back with their in flight entertainer, Auntie Heather! I think they also watched Cars too on the way ;)
The three amigos holding hands in front of Papa's truck...I love this picture!!!We got home and everyone ran out some extra energy from the car ride, ate some supper, and for the most part seemed to be ready for bed fairly quickly. So we got everyone washed up in the tub and pulled out the trundle under Gracie's bed for Nathan to sleep on. I questioned in my head how well it was going to go for all three kiddos to be in one room, but if the first night was any indication for the rest of the week it was going to be a breeze...they were all sound asleep and breathing hard by 8:45! And that wasn't even the best part, aside from a small incident in the night where Nathan rolled down into bed with Karys ;) everyone stayed in bed all night and didn't wake up the next morning until almost 7:30!!! Thank you God for a good nights rest...much needed recovery after the weekend everyone had ;)

REVAMP

Last weekend we took a group of 20, 16 students and 4 adults, to the Twin Cities for the weekend to attend a retreat called REVAMP. Revamp is a weekend event designed to inspire people to take on and live out the heart of Jesus for people living in poverty. These events focus on helping you discover God's heart for those living in poverty through experiential learning activities, exposure to existing non-profit ministries working to meet the needs of those in poverty and interviews with Christians who are living intentionally in urban neighborhoods. This unique high energy experience provides a mix of small group and large group activities that help you begin to understand poverty, while inspiring you to put your faith into action.

Revamp states its mission statement to be "Revamp Vision":That the Church would fully engage in its calling to love and serve those living in poverty. "Revamp Core Purpose":To inspire people to take on and live out the heart of Jesus for those living in poverty.
This was a great experience for our young group of students. It is hard to embrace the things of this world that go on outside the walls of our small town sometimes, and REVAMP did a good job of exposing students to those things and getting their minds to truly think about loving, caring for, and accepting all people in the same way that Jesus would.
Our weekend started at a church with a rockin' rap concert and a speaker. We then got to go out and serve the next morning at various service sites. Our site was called Community Emergency Services. Community Emergency Service (CES) is a non-profit crisis relief and empowerment ministry that first and foremost glorifies our Lord and extends His love to those in the inner city of South Minneapolis. It is basically an old church that has been transformed into a food pantry. CES began in 1971 when prominent Twin Cities businessman Russell Lund approached Augustana Lutheran Church in Minneapolis to enhance their outreach by helping people with food and gifts on a person-to-person basis. Located in the Phillips Neighborhood, CES provides services to over 55,000 people annually. This church was in no way a super organized food pantry. As you can see from the pictures above, the sanctuary has become the "sorting ground" for all of the food that is donated. And sorted might be a slight understatement as well. We got so many comments from the kids how unorganized things were...yet the number of ppl this establishment serves and number off needs that they are able to meet is phenomenal! While we were there a large group from one of the area churches came in with all of their food donations...It was incredible the amount of food they brought in! Each bag of food was weighed in on this scale, then placed on the stage of the church to await sorting. Our job was to work on the sorting, cans on one side of the pews...dried goods on the others. We weren't able to start then sorting it out into the appropriate rows just b/c we ran out of time. So crazy how much food came in, and how quickly it was projected to go back out...never enough! After the food was sorted it was brought to various rooms throughout the church for storage. No joke there had to have been 6-8 different places on different levels of the church where things were stored. How they ever find the things they need must be a miracle within itself ;)Some of our guys worked on bagging rice into separate bags as well as lentils into Ziploc bags. This pantry's focus was not only to feed the hungry but also to feed them nutritional substances that would grow and sustain them, ultimately preventing more problems that may accompany malnutrition. For lunch we were presented with a "lunch challenge". Each person was given $1. With that dollar you could join with 5-6 other ppl and seek out your best options for lunch. You were strategically placed in a neighborhood with ethnic grocery stores, fast food options, and corner markets, and from there you were responsible for coming up with the best way to feed everyone in your group. This was difficult b/c the foods in the ethnic grocery stores were so different and unfamiliar, the corner markets were more over priced than groceries in a 7-11 or some other type of gas station and the fast food restaurants were definitely not the healthiest nor did you get much food. However, kids did pretty well with this challenge. Rob's group bought a package of hot dogs and utilized the microwave at the local market, a bag of chips, bread, and a honey bun for dessert. My group ended up choosing McDonalds and was able to get 2 double cheese burgers, a chicken sandwich, 2 apple pies and fries for our group. For the most part everyone in our van commented to be satisfied after lunch was through; however, when asked how they would do this every day, every meal for a week I think they were overwhelmed by the task!Following lunch we headed to this living complex. Inside are condos that have been established in the Phillips neighborhood to promote community and diversity. We were able to chat for an hour with a young man who has intentionally chosen, with his wife, to live in this community as Christians and seek to love on and do life with their neighbors and those they come in contact with. It was an amazing as well as interesting testimony just of God's calling on their lives as well as how they came to know Christ and now how that is leading them to lead others to the same discovery. This was many of our kid's favorite part of the weekend. After that story, it was off to the Global Market. The concept of the Global Market was developed in the summer of 2003, the City of Minneapolis was searching for a use for the long vacant Sears building on Lake Street. Local business owners and neighborhood groups from the Phillips, Central and Powderhorn Park neighborhoods helped convince City officials that the historic building should be saved and, ultimately, connected to the ethnic diversity of the neighborhood and the entrepreneurial energy of the businesses on Lake Street. The Midtown Global Market subsequently took shape through the extraordinary efforts of a wide range of people. Entrepreneurs took significant risks, made commitments to occupy space in the Global Market, and invested their time, resources and creative energy and the Midtown Global Market officially opened for business in May of 2006. Its MISSION STATEMENT stands to read: "We exist to develop and maintain a public market that builds upon the economic, social and cultural assets within the surrounding community and welcomes the diverse peoples of this community to share and celebrate together the healthy foods, arts, crafts and other aspects of their heritages." It was so interesting just to walk the aisles and just see so many different cultures represented in one common place...the kids loved it!Sunday was more of a laid back day, we woke up, cleaned up the sleeping areas and ate breakfast. We had some downtime before the church service and so our kids were busy playing the game "Big Booty" which had been a common theme for the trip ;)

The ones who weren't playing, and who weren't drinking coffee ;) were struggling to stay awake until church started. After church we quickly headed out to meet our kiddos on time in Albert Lea...Heather and Seth were so kind as to be our chauffeurs for the weekend and transport our girls back and forth the Grandma Doreen's house;) Thanks guys!

I think all in all weekends like this are really hard for Rob and I for the main reason that we are immersed in a way back into city life. We truly have a heart for city and diversity after living in California. It is hard not to ask the questions, "Really God, Orange City?" And to look for our purpose here sometimes...But one of the main things God convicted me of this weekend was that not only do these kids need to know that heart for the city, they need to see God's call to us to love the destitute and to care for the needy, but MY KIDS need to know it too. I really feel like I am presented with a mission field right between the walls of my own home. It is way to easy for me to raise my kids in safe little OC never really having to deal with the reality of what lies out there. However, that is not what God calls us to.

He calls us to the words of Isaiah 61 "to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor."

And that is exactly what I intend to teach and instill in my girls...each day striving to live that out in my own life that it may not just be words to them but truly a way of life and a way of love.

27 Weeks

Crazy to think I am already finishing up my 2nd trimester! Now that I am fully in maternity clothes I am SO grateful for the "clothing exchange" that I have been able to be a part of. The day this pic was taken I had clothes from three different ppl on and I think in my entire closet I have clothes from 6 different ppl! What a season of life when you can share the clothes you definitely only want to fit into for a couple months and then be able to pass on! Still feeling like this is my smallest pregnancy yet, guess we will see what the scale says at my next appt! Last month was the big weight gain month for me so I am hoping to level off real soon ;)

Recovery Day

The one thing about having weekend visitors is there is usually a recovery time that needs to happen;) The Monday after Sarah and Leah came to visit we definitely made Monday a Jammie/Cleaning Day. The girls had cleaned hard that morning so after lunch I put in Enchanted for them. We hadn't watched it in a while and I don't think Karys was quite sure that she liked it. Pretty soon she was standing around the corner of the kitchen watching it from there. She kept inching forward little by little but never very far. She told me it wasn't scary at all and I made sure to watch to be sure. Pretty soon Karys was lying down with her bum in the air watching the movie from the entry way!Wasn't long before she was out cold...don't understand how you can fall asleep like this! Hard floor, bum in the air...really??!Gracie was asleep too not more than 20 minutes into the movie and she and Karys weren't the only ones...
Maggie too was exhausted from playing with and chasing all the little girls over the weekend!
