Nathan comes to stay...

On our way home from the REVAMP retreat, we stopped in Albert Lea to pick up not only our girls...but also our nephew Nathan. Nathan was getting the awesome opportunity to come to the metropolis of Orange City for SPRING BREAK! I had volunteered to keep him when the girls asked me the Thursday before if cousin Nathan could "come over and play?" Not knowing what to say right away I thought about it a minute and then thought, you know what...he might just be able to. I have been on Spring Break these past two weeks and with the Comforts coming from the Des Moines area anyway, we might just be able to work out a little swap. Things had been going pretty well with pregnancy and i just didn't see another opportunity in the near future to invite him just schedule wise and things getting closer to the arrival of our new little sister! So luckily we offered and his mommy and daddy said YES! Nathan was all excited to come and visit Gracie and Karys and was good to go for the car ride up. The kiddos got to ride in Papa Brent's truck on the way to Albert Lea b/c it was the only car that all three car seats would fit in ;) and then they got to ride in "big vans" with a bunch of high schoolers the rest of the way to OC. They loved it! Some of the girls we have babysit did a GREAT job of keeping them engaged and entertained ;) Nathan opened right up to them and introduced himself as "Nathan Josiah Vande Lune"

A pic of all the kiddos lined up in the back with their in flight entertainer, Auntie Heather! I think they also watched Cars too on the way ;)
The three amigos holding hands in front of Papa's truck...I love this picture!!!We got home and everyone ran out some extra energy from the car ride, ate some supper, and for the most part seemed to be ready for bed fairly quickly. So we got everyone washed up in the tub and pulled out the trundle under Gracie's bed for Nathan to sleep on. I questioned in my head how well it was going to go for all three kiddos to be in one room, but if the first night was any indication for the rest of the week it was going to be a breeze...they were all sound asleep and breathing hard by 8:45! And that wasn't even the best part, aside from a small incident in the night where Nathan rolled down into bed with Karys ;) everyone stayed in bed all night and didn't wake up the next morning until almost 7:30!!! Thank you God for a good nights rest...much needed recovery after the weekend everyone had ;)

REVAMP

Last weekend we took a group of 20, 16 students and 4 adults, to the Twin Cities for the weekend to attend a retreat called REVAMP. Revamp is a weekend event designed to inspire people to take on and live out the heart of Jesus for people living in poverty. These events focus on helping you discover God's heart for those living in poverty through experiential learning activities, exposure to existing non-profit ministries working to meet the needs of those in poverty and interviews with Christians who are living intentionally in urban neighborhoods. This unique high energy experience provides a mix of small group and large group activities that help you begin to understand poverty, while inspiring you to put your faith into action.

Revamp states its mission statement to be "Revamp Vision":That the Church would fully engage in its calling to love and serve those living in poverty. "Revamp Core Purpose":To inspire people to take on and live out the heart of Jesus for those living in poverty.
This was a great experience for our young group of students. It is hard to embrace the things of this world that go on outside the walls of our small town sometimes, and REVAMP did a good job of exposing students to those things and getting their minds to truly think about loving, caring for, and accepting all people in the same way that Jesus would.
Our weekend started at a church with a rockin' rap concert and a speaker. We then got to go out and serve the next morning at various service sites. Our site was called Community Emergency Services. Community Emergency Service (CES) is a non-profit crisis relief and empowerment ministry that first and foremost glorifies our Lord and extends His love to those in the inner city of South Minneapolis. It is basically an old church that has been transformed into a food pantry. CES began in 1971 when prominent Twin Cities businessman Russell Lund approached Augustana Lutheran Church in Minneapolis to enhance their outreach by helping people with food and gifts on a person-to-person basis. Located in the Phillips Neighborhood, CES provides services to over 55,000 people annually. This church was in no way a super organized food pantry. As you can see from the pictures above, the sanctuary has become the "sorting ground" for all of the food that is donated. And sorted might be a slight understatement as well. We got so many comments from the kids how unorganized things were...yet the number of ppl this establishment serves and number off needs that they are able to meet is phenomenal! While we were there a large group from one of the area churches came in with all of their food donations...It was incredible the amount of food they brought in! Each bag of food was weighed in on this scale, then placed on the stage of the church to await sorting. Our job was to work on the sorting, cans on one side of the pews...dried goods on the others. We weren't able to start then sorting it out into the appropriate rows just b/c we ran out of time. So crazy how much food came in, and how quickly it was projected to go back out...never enough! After the food was sorted it was brought to various rooms throughout the church for storage. No joke there had to have been 6-8 different places on different levels of the church where things were stored. How they ever find the things they need must be a miracle within itself ;)Some of our guys worked on bagging rice into separate bags as well as lentils into Ziploc bags. This pantry's focus was not only to feed the hungry but also to feed them nutritional substances that would grow and sustain them, ultimately preventing more problems that may accompany malnutrition. For lunch we were presented with a "lunch challenge". Each person was given $1. With that dollar you could join with 5-6 other ppl and seek out your best options for lunch. You were strategically placed in a neighborhood with ethnic grocery stores, fast food options, and corner markets, and from there you were responsible for coming up with the best way to feed everyone in your group. This was difficult b/c the foods in the ethnic grocery stores were so different and unfamiliar, the corner markets were more over priced than groceries in a 7-11 or some other type of gas station and the fast food restaurants were definitely not the healthiest nor did you get much food. However, kids did pretty well with this challenge. Rob's group bought a package of hot dogs and utilized the microwave at the local market, a bag of chips, bread, and a honey bun for dessert. My group ended up choosing McDonalds and was able to get 2 double cheese burgers, a chicken sandwich, 2 apple pies and fries for our group. For the most part everyone in our van commented to be satisfied after lunch was through; however, when asked how they would do this every day, every meal for a week I think they were overwhelmed by the task!Following lunch we headed to this living complex. Inside are condos that have been established in the Phillips neighborhood to promote community and diversity. We were able to chat for an hour with a young man who has intentionally chosen, with his wife, to live in this community as Christians and seek to love on and do life with their neighbors and those they come in contact with. It was an amazing as well as interesting testimony just of God's calling on their lives as well as how they came to know Christ and now how that is leading them to lead others to the same discovery. This was many of our kid's favorite part of the weekend. After that story, it was off to the Global Market. The concept of the Global Market was developed in the summer of 2003, the City of Minneapolis was searching for a use for the long vacant Sears building on Lake Street. Local business owners and neighborhood groups from the Phillips, Central and Powderhorn Park neighborhoods helped convince City officials that the historic building should be saved and, ultimately, connected to the ethnic diversity of the neighborhood and the entrepreneurial energy of the businesses on Lake Street. The Midtown Global Market subsequently took shape through the extraordinary efforts of a wide range of people. Entrepreneurs took significant risks, made commitments to occupy space in the Global Market, and invested their time, resources and creative energy and the Midtown Global Market officially opened for business in May of 2006. Its MISSION STATEMENT stands to read: "We exist to develop and maintain a public market that builds upon the economic, social and cultural assets within the surrounding community and welcomes the diverse peoples of this community to share and celebrate together the healthy foods, arts, crafts and other aspects of their heritages." It was so interesting just to walk the aisles and just see so many different cultures represented in one common place...the kids loved it!Sunday was more of a laid back day, we woke up, cleaned up the sleeping areas and ate breakfast. We had some downtime before the church service and so our kids were busy playing the game "Big Booty" which had been a common theme for the trip ;)

The ones who weren't playing, and who weren't drinking coffee ;) were struggling to stay awake until church started. After church we quickly headed out to meet our kiddos on time in Albert Lea...Heather and Seth were so kind as to be our chauffeurs for the weekend and transport our girls back and forth the Grandma Doreen's house;) Thanks guys!

I think all in all weekends like this are really hard for Rob and I for the main reason that we are immersed in a way back into city life. We truly have a heart for city and diversity after living in California. It is hard not to ask the questions, "Really God, Orange City?" And to look for our purpose here sometimes...But one of the main things God convicted me of this weekend was that not only do these kids need to know that heart for the city, they need to see God's call to us to love the destitute and to care for the needy, but MY KIDS need to know it too. I really feel like I am presented with a mission field right between the walls of my own home. It is way to easy for me to raise my kids in safe little OC never really having to deal with the reality of what lies out there. However, that is not what God calls us to.

He calls us to the words of Isaiah 61 "to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor."

And that is exactly what I intend to teach and instill in my girls...each day striving to live that out in my own life that it may not just be words to them but truly a way of life and a way of love.

27 Weeks

Crazy to think I am already finishing up my 2nd trimester! Now that I am fully in maternity clothes I am SO grateful for the "clothing exchange" that I have been able to be a part of. The day this pic was taken I had clothes from three different ppl on and I think in my entire closet I have clothes from 6 different ppl! What a season of life when you can share the clothes you definitely only want to fit into for a couple months and then be able to pass on! Still feeling like this is my smallest pregnancy yet, guess we will see what the scale says at my next appt! Last month was the big weight gain month for me so I am hoping to level off real soon ;)

Recovery Day

The one thing about having weekend visitors is there is usually a recovery time that needs to happen;) The Monday after Sarah and Leah came to visit we definitely made Monday a Jammie/Cleaning Day. The girls had cleaned hard that morning so after lunch I put in Enchanted for them. We hadn't watched it in a while and I don't think Karys was quite sure that she liked it. Pretty soon she was standing around the corner of the kitchen watching it from there. She kept inching forward little by little but never very far. She told me it wasn't scary at all and I made sure to watch to be sure. Pretty soon Karys was lying down with her bum in the air watching the movie from the entry way!Wasn't long before she was out cold...don't understand how you can fall asleep like this! Hard floor, bum in the air...really??!Gracie was asleep too not more than 20 minutes into the movie and she and Karys weren't the only ones...
Maggie too was exhausted from playing with and chasing all the little girls over the weekend!

Yay for Weekend Guests!

For the third weekend in a row we were blessed to have weekend visitors! Papa and Grandma Sally had planned to come over and Sarah and Leah were going to join them on Friday night. However, things came up at work and they had an auction the next day so my mom and dad were unable to come :( I don't know who sounded more bummed, the girls or my dad when Rob talked to him on the phone. However, Sarah and Leah were still able to head over on Saturday and the girls were so excited for that. After all what would we do for a whole weekend with no one around to hang out with? ;)They woke up on Saturday morning asking the question "When are Sarah and Leah coming?" Rob got them distracted for a while involving them in some morning stretches. It was so funny! Yes to watch them try to stretch but more so to listen to Rob grunt and complain about how old he is and how tight he was after having a week of basketball again! He had gotten out of habit the two weeks of intensives. We whipped him quickly back into shape that day though once Sarah and Leah arrived. He served as the official "horsey " for the three ladies. Sarah helped them all get on......and had to squeeze them on a little so they would all fit...We did get a quick picture-not everyone was looking but in the next few seconds......we lost Leah and Karys was quick to follow suit ;) Gracie stayed on for a while but eventually got bucked off as well!Karys and Leah had a ton of laughs jumping and dancing around with Auntie Sarah!Once Leah was dizzy from the dancing, she headed over to get herself straightened back out by Uncle Rob...Then it was off to the bathtub...Gracie had taken a shower with Rob earlier that morning so she was really excited to "give" Leah and Karys a bath ;)Once everyone was all clean and dressed in their princess jammies...Karys led everyone in some "Simon Says" It was hilarious! She would call out for everyone to clap their hands and stomp their feet, then started to recite a rhyme we learned in Kindermusik..."Tall as a tree, Wide as a house, Thin as a pin, and Small as a mouse" So funny to watch them all try to follow each other and do the motions! The next morning we got snow...really? Snow in March!!! I know, I know, this is NW Iowa ;) Anyway, it finally stopped and Sarah and Leah decided to head home so they could be home on time in case they did hit some weather on the way. We all headed out to help them clear their car off and play in the snow a little. The nice thing was that it wasn't so frigid cold...we really haven't played in the snow much this winter b/c whenever it has snowed the temps have been SO cold that my skinny little ladies haven't lasted that long outside. The snow was so white and fluffy that all the girls were tasting it...we just had to remind them never to eat the stuff that was yellow ;) Luckily Maggie goes to the bathroom mostly in the back yard.Gracie loves being out there! She was the first one dressed and eager to get her rake and help daddy clear the driveway off.Karys is a little more hesitant, she doesn't like to be cold and doesn't like to wear snow boots. She would only go outside if I let her go out with her rain boots on ;)Took Leah a little bit but eventually she was reaching down to dig into the snow right along with the girls......she loved watching the girls throw the snow and was eager to show Sarah and I the snow she picked up...Look, Mommy! I have snow! So cute to watch her try to eat it and throw it right along with the other girls...won't be long until they will be smiling and scheming right along side each other ;)Karys loved throwing snowballs! She would get up right next to you and basically smash it into you. If she didn't it would veer off to the side or go flying backwards ;)Daddy was causing some trouble and throwing a few snowballs too...

...Got himself in some trouble when he landed one right in Karys' hood!

She quickly stopped crying though once he cleaned it all out and she got the "free shot" opportunity to smash one of her own on his head!

All in all we had a GREAT time with Leah and Sarah! Thanks for coming over to see us ladies!

PJs and Toddler Tunes

In the beginning weeks of March the weather flopped back and forth so much between nice days and frigid temperatures, that I feel like the girls and I couldn't really keep up with what kind of plan to make for the day until we woke up and looked outside. On the days it was nice we would scrap whatever indoor plans we had and head outside to play and on the days it wasn't we would camp out in our comfy clothes, the girls one day changed into 4 different pairs of PJs throughout the day!!! They also got into listening to our iPODs, Rob got one for his birthday as well ;) and we have some of their music on them and on Rob's you can watch videos. They loved it! One night we even went to play at the RSC at the college and run some of our pent up energy out, and once Gracie was done playing around all she wanted to do was listen to the ipod...she barely took it out to get her coat on to go back home! I don't know if we are quite that ready for our girls to enter the consuming world of technology! "Here let me find you some Bible songs"

"Gracie, you know this song?" Quickly followed by Karys singing along loudly ;)

"Mommy, we need some longer headphones...Karys keeps pulling it out of my ear!"

Karys' Sunday Ritual

So this is Karys' normal Sunday position...she does the dame thing every Sunday after we get in the door from church and start to talk about what we are going to have for lunch. And holding true to routine it was no different the Sunday Heather and Seth were getting ready to leave. We got home from church, she went into the living room and laid down on her pillow and when we asked her what she wanted for lunch she was already breathing hard and out cold. I remember Heather saying, "Isn't it funny how she puts herself to sleep for nap but loves to get in and out of bed at night and just has a hard time with that?"

So true, the girl cannot function without her nap but hardly ever is she ready to wind down for the night and go to bed....funny!
